Snoring & Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
If you are suffering from this condition, then your breathing can be shallow or you may even stop breathing while you are asleep. It can happen plenty of times during the night when you are sleeping. Obstructive sleep apnea happens when something completely blocks the upper airway during sleep. This makes your diaphragm work harder to open the obstructed airways and pull the air into the lungs. Breathing resumes with a loud gasp, body jerk or with a snort. You won’t be able to sleep well but you may not know this.
UP3/UPPP surgery for sleep apnoea: UPPP is the medical abbreviation for uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, a surgery which involves the removing of tissue which is present at the back of your throat, which includes uvula, soft palate or sometimes additional soft tissue at the back of the throat. This surgery is aimed to treat obstructive sleep apnea, which is a condition in which the structures can block the airway. Due to the complications involved in this surgery, most of the doctors recommend other treatment measures for the sleep apnea, mainly C-PAP. If the other treatments fail, a UPPP will be recommended by the doctor but some of the sources say that the success rate of this surgery is only 50%.
Most of the sources have claimed that the recovery time of this surgery is about 3 to 4 weeks and the surgery can be painful. This information might not be helpful when considering the UPPP surgery, because every person’s recovery time will vary.
Tongue base reduction: The base of the tongue is the common site of obstruction in the patients who suffer from obstructive sleep apnoea. In the procedure, reducing the amount of tissue from the tongue base via a variety of methods is an effective method to reduce the apnea. One method is via the application of radiofrequency waves. A surge of energy is introduced to the tissue which results in the shrinking of the tissue. The radiofrequency waves are then directed to the specific sites in tongue base without the tissue damage. The procedure is minimally invasive and can sometimes be done while the patient is awake in the clinic. Another way to reduce the tongue base is via the direct excision. In this procedure which is also known as glossectomy, the tongue base tissues get removed by coblation. This is done under anesthesia in the operating room and the pain is very little. Due to the risk of airway compromise, patients are observed overnight in the hospital. According to the study, all the methods of the tongue base reduction can be effective when employed properly.
