Hernia is a commonly heard term and is not a serious issue. A hernia occurs when an internal tissue or an organ breaks through a hole in the muscles. It is one of the most common surgeries to treat hernia. Hernia surgery is needed only when negative symptoms occur and need medical intervention. Now, before undergoing hernia surgery, there are few things you can do to prep up yourself for the surgery well and lower the risk of complications during and after surgery. So here is the list of 8 things to do before hernia surgery.

8 things to do before hernia surgery

  1. Stop some medications to avoid excessive bleeding during and after surgery:

These medicines will include aspirin, as aspirin makes the blood thinner and leads to excessive bleeding, you must avoid consuming aspirin one week or more prior to the surgery day. Discuss with your surgeon if you can consume low-dose aspirin. Other medications include- Plavix, Naprosyn, Celebrex, Ibuprofen, and Coumadin. You must avoid these medications before surgery. You should have a word with your doctor or prescriber and surgeon as well to know what medications you have to stop and what you can have in little or low doses and before how many days.
Over the counter use of antibiotics

  2. Stop or cut down over the counter herbs:

These herbs have certain contents that could result in heavy bleeding during surgery and hamper your healing process post-surgery. Such herbs include- garlic tablets, ginger tablets, ginkgo, ginseng, fish oil, chondroitin and many more. You must be aware of their properties and their effect on your body functions when cut tearing of any body part is concerned.

  3. Avoid food and liquid after midnight the day before surgery:

Consumption of solid food or liquid after midnight the day before surgery can alter the blood test report results before surgery. This is also related to complications with anesthesia during the surgery procedure. So, you can stop consuming these in the evening before your surgery due date.
Avoid fatty and processed foods as much as you can

  4. Avoid anti-inflammatory medicines after surgery:

Avoid consuming such anti-inflammatory medication still your surgeon doesn’t instruct you to resume them. Such medications include- ibuprofen (Mortin, Advil) and Naprosyn (Aleve). You should stop consuming these medicines seven days before the surgery unless otherwise instructed. However, it is ok to take Tylenol if something is needed for pain.

  5. Avoid tobacco, smoke and alcohol:

You should avoid substance abuse of any kind at least 24 hours before the surgery. If you have any kind of controlled substance, tell your doctor about it. Such things can have an impact on your surgery. Remember that after surgery, even a small amount of alcohol or tobacco can cause low blood sugar and intoxication. Not consuming such substances before surgery will reduce your risk of complications.

  6. Start eating light food 1-2 weeks prior:

Simply cutting out certain dietary elements (without malnutrition) is a feasible, inexpensive and effective way to protect the body against stress from any kind of operation. The light body will take the perfect time to recover. So it’s better to practice cutting fat by taking a balanced diet consisting of enough protein in your diet to feel healthier and lighter. This will help in speedy recovery post-surgery and will diminish the complications as well.
    Eat Healthy

  7. Follow hygiene and comfortable clothing on the day of surgery:

Make sure you wear loose comfortable clothes on the day of surgery to keep your body and brain relaxed. Do not wear any makeup, jewelry or nail paint as this will make it difficult for your doctor or surgeon to determine if there is any difference or pale tint in your body color. Remove your contact lenses before the procedure. And do not shave the surgical site by yourself. Your team will look after that. Take a bath before you appear for surgery to avoid any kind of infection. Do not apply lotions, deodorants or perfumes.

  8. Look for a responsible caretaker:

You may not be able to drive yourself home after surgery. So, make sure you have someone to escort you safely if you can go home on the day of surgery. And if you need to stay at the hospital, someone should stay with you so if any emergency arises, he/she should be there to fetch arrangements on spot in no time.
