I’m planning to have a medical abortion but I’m nervous because I don’t know what symptoms are normal. What should I expect and how long does the process usually take?

It’s normal to feel anxious. After the first pill, many women don’t feel much, maybe light cramps or light spotting. The main symptoms start after the second pill. You may experience heavy bleeding, cramps, and clots, similar to a very heavy period.

This usually begins within a few hours and is most intense for the first 4–8 hours. After that, bleeding becomes lighter and can continue for 1–2 weeks.

This is normal as long as symptoms are manageable. However, if you soak more than 2 pads per hour for 2 hours, have severe pain, or a fever lasting more than 24 hours, you should contact a healthcare provider.

Most women recover well with rest, fluids, and prescribed pain relief.
