Swollen, Twisted Leg Veins with Heaviness : Is It Varicose Veins?

I have swollen, twisted veins on my leg that are clearly visible. My leg feels heavy and tired, especially after standing for a long time. Sometimes there is mild pain and itching. Is this a serious problem? Why does this happen, and what treatment is available?

The visible, bulging veins seen on the leg are known as varicose veins, which occur when the valves inside the leg veins become weak and blood starts pooling instead of flowing properly toward the heart.

This leads to symptoms such as leg heaviness, pain, itching, swelling, and fatigue, especially after standing or sitting for long hours. Varicose veins are common in people with prolonged standing jobs, family history, obesity, or previous leg swelling.

If left untreated, they can progress and cause skin discoloration, hardening of the skin, wounds, or even non-healing leg ulcers. Treatment depends on the severity and may include lifestyle changes, compression stockings, medications for symptom relief, and advanced minimally invasive procedures like laser or radiofrequency treatment, which are safe and effective. Early consultation with a specialist helps prevent complications and improves long-term outcomes.
