How to Track Your Menstrual Cycle the Right Way
1 month ago
My cycles are irregular and I want to start tracking them to understand my pattern better. What should I be recording, and are period tracker apps actually useful for this? What's the correct way to do it?

Tracking your cycle properly gives you genuinely useful data – both for understanding your pattern and for productive conversations with a doctor.
What to record each cycle:
- Start date: Day 1 is the first day of real bleeding (spotting before doesn’t count)
- End date: Last day with any bleeding
- Flow: Light, moderate, or heavy – note if you’re changing pads more than once every 2 hours (that’s heavy)
- Pain levels: Cramp severity and location
- Discharge: Color, consistency, amount on non-period days
- Spotting between periods
- Symptoms: Bloating, breast tenderness, mood changes, and when they occur
Calculating cycle length: Day 1 of one period to Day 1 of the next.
Apps: Flo, Clue, and Period Tracker are reliable options.
