PCOS/PCOD Symptoms in Women : Causes, Diagnosis, Treatment & Lifestyle Management

I am 27 years old and have been facing irregular periods for the past several months along with weight gain, acne and excess facial hair growth. My periods sometimes skip for 2–3 months and when they do occur, they are often heavy and painful. I am concerned whether this could be PCOS or PCOD and what steps I should take to manage this condition effectively.

From the symptoms you’ve described, PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) is a likely possibility. It is a hormonal disorder that affects the ovaries and leads to irregular ovulation. Common symptoms include irregular or absent periods, weight gain, acne, excessive hair growth and sometimes difficulty in conceiving.

Diagnosis is usually made through a combination of clinical evaluation, blood tests to assess hormone levels and ultrasound imaging of the ovaries. Treatment is individualized and focuses on managing symptoms and restoring hormonal balance. Lifestyle modifications such as weight management, a balanced diet and regular exercise play a crucial role.

Medications may be prescribed to regulate menstrual cycles, control symptoms like acne or hair growth and improve ovulation if fertility is a concern. PCOS is a manageable condition and with proper care, symptoms can be effectively controlled.
