Missed Period After Emergency Pill & Irregular Bleeding : What Should I Do?

I missed my period and took a pregnancy test, which came back negative. I had bleeding for a few days after taking an emergency contraceptive pill earlier in the cycle. My last normal period was around 1st January, and I had another bleeding episode around mid-January after taking the pill. Now I’m unsure whether this bleeding was a period or something else. My cycles are usually regular (around 28–30 days). What should I do next, and when should I expect my next period?

Based on your history, the bleeding you experienced after taking the emergency contraceptive pill is most likely a hormone-related withdrawal bleeding, which can sometimes mimic a period. This can temporarily shift or reset your menstrual cycle.

In such cases, it is common for the cycle to become slightly irregular for that month. If we consider the mid-January bleeding as your new cycle start, your next period may be expected within 28–30 days from that date. It is advisable to wait for about 7–10 days and monitor your cycle.

Since your pregnancy test is negative, pregnancy is unlikely, but if your period still does not occur after the waiting period, you should repeat the pregnancy test and consult your doctor. If needed, medication can be prescribed to help regulate or induce your periods after proper evaluation.
