Intermittent bleeding or spotting can sometimes continue for several weeks after a medical abortion, but heavy bleeding even 5 weeks later is not usually considered completely normal. It may happen due to hormonal changes, retained pregnancy tissue, infection, or the first menstrual period returning after the abortion. Some people experience bleeding that stops and starts again, but persistent or heavy flow should not be ignored.

You should see a gynecologist if the bleeding is heavy, associated with severe cramps, foul-smelling discharge, fever, dizziness, or weakness. An ultrasound and pregnancy test are often recommended to check whether the abortion is complete and to rule out complications.
