I am experiencing abnormal bleeding and pelvic pain, and my doctor has recommended a hysteroscopy. Can this procedure also help in the early detection of uterine or cervical cancer?

Yes, hysteroscopy can play an important role in identifying the cause of abnormal bleeding and can also help in the early detection or ruling out of conditions like uterine or cervical cancer. Hysteroscopy is a diagnostic procedure in which a small camera is inserted into the uterus, allowing the doctor to directly view the inside of the uterus and its lining in real time.

During the procedure, the doctor can clearly see abnormalities such as polyps, fibroids, or thickening of the uterine lining (endometrium). If anything unusual is found, a tissue sample (biopsy) can be taken from the uterus or cervix and sent for laboratory examination. This biopsy helps pathologists examine the cells under a microscope and determine whether there are any precancerous or cancerous changes.

If your doctor has recommended hysteroscopy after taking your history and examination, it is advisable to proceed, as it provides a detailed internal view and helps in accurate diagnosis and timely management of serious conditions.
