Accidentally Detected Gallstone on Ultrasound : Should You Opt for Surgery or Monitoring?
Hi doctor, my father is 60 years old and recently underwent an ultrasound during a routine health checkup, where gallstones were detected. However, he is not experiencing any severe pain or major discomfort, only occasional mild indigestion. We are unsure whether surgery is necessary immediately or if this condition can be managed conservatively without intervention. Could you please guide us on the best course of action?

When gallstones are detected incidentally without significant symptoms, the condition is referred to as asymptomatic gallstones. In such cases, immediate surgery is not always required. Many patients live with gallstones without ever developing complications.
However, it is important to understand that gallstones do not dissolve on their own and may become symptomatic over time. If your father begins to experience symptoms such as abdominal pain, recurrent indigestion, bloating, nausea, or complications like infection or inflammation, surgical intervention may become necessary.
In asymptomatic cases, doctors usually recommend watchful waiting along with regular monitoring and lifestyle modifications such as a low-fat diet. Surgery is generally advised only when symptoms develop or if there are risk factors that increase the likelihood of complications.
