Bartholin Cyst Symptoms : Causes of Vaginal Swelling and Effective Treatment Options

I am 32 years old and have noticed a painful swelling near the vaginal opening on one side. The swelling sometimes becomes tender, especially while sitting or walking and seems to increase in size over time. I am not sure what this is, but it is causing discomfort in daily activities. Could this be a Bartholin cyst and what are the treatment options available?

The symptoms you’ve described are consistent with a Bartholin cyst, which occurs when the Bartholin gland near the vaginal opening becomes blocked, leading to fluid accumulation and swelling. If the cyst becomes infected, it can turn into an abscess, causing increased pain, redness and tenderness.

Small cysts that are not painful may not require immediate treatment and can be managed with warm sitz baths and observation. However, if the cyst is large, painful, or recurrent, medical intervention may be necessary. Treatment options include drainage procedures, placement of a catheter, or minor surgical procedures to prevent recurrence.

If infection is present, antibiotics may also be prescribed. Consult a gynecologist helps determine the severity and the most appropriate treatment plan.
