Can a Child’s Eye Power Improve Over Time? Why Early Detection Matters

My child has a power in their eyes. Can it get better with time? Is early detection important?

Whether a child’s eye power can improve depends on the type of power and the child’s age. In the early years, especially up to 6–8 years, the eyes are still developing. Mild cylinder power and low plus power (farsightedness) often reduce naturally as the eye grows.
However, minus power (near-sightedness) usually increases with age, especially with excessive mobile use, constant near work, and lack of outdoor activities. Treatments can help slow its progression, but minus power rarely goes away completely.
Early detection is very important because children may not realize they are seeing poorly. If one eye is weaker, it can lead to lazy eye (amblyopia), which can be treated effectively only if detected early, ideally before 6 years of age.
That’s why an eye check-up around 4–5 years, or earlier if there are symptoms like sitting too close to the TV or learning difficulties, is essential. Regular yearly eye exams help ensure healthy vision and proper overall development.
