Cataract Surgery : Procedure Time, Lens Options & Insurance Coverage

Cataract is a very common age-related eye condition where the natural lens becomes cloudy. The only permanent treatment is surgery, which is a quick and safe procedure. Cataract surgery usually takes around 5–10 minutes per eye, is done under local anesthesia, and most patients are discharged the same day. Vision starts improving within a few days, and full recovery is generally quick with minimal rest required.

During the procedure, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). Premium lens options such as Alcon are available. Some lenses are imported, which makes them slightly more expensive due to import duties. Indian-made lenses are also available with excellent quality at a comparatively lower cost. The choice of lens (monofocal, multifocal, toric, etc.) depends on whether you want better distance vision, near vision, or reduced dependence on glasses.

Regarding insurance:

• If you possess insurance, please provide your policy document for verification of eligibility, coverage limits, and co-payment clauses.
• Many basic policies cover standard cataract surgery up to a capped amount (often ₹30,000–₹40,000 per eye). Any cost for upgrading to a premium lens usually has to be paid by the patient.
• Since you mentioned you are self-employed and do not have corporate insurance, the procedure would be on a self-pay basis unless you hold a personal health policy.
