Cataract Surgery with Diabetes & BP : Safety, Cost & Lens Types
3 months ago
My mother has already undergone cataract surgery in her left eye, and we are now planning surgery for her right eye. She has diabetes and hypertension, but both are well controlled. The previous surgery used a monofocal lens and cost around ₹50,000–₹60,000. We would like to know whether the second eye should also have a monofocal lens or if an advanced lens option can be considered. We also want to understand whether she will need glasses after surgery and if corporate insurance will cover the cost of the second cataract surgery.

Since your mother already has a monofocal lens implanted in her left eye, it is generally recommended to continue with a monofocal lens in the right eye as well to maintain visual balance. A monofocal lens is designed to provide clear vision at one distance only, while an extended depth-of-focus (EDOF) lens allows for a greater range of vision. While premium or multifocal lenses are available, mixing very different lens types between eyes is usually not advisable.
However, an advanced monofocal or extended depth-of-focus (EDOF) option may still be considered, depending on the doctor’s evaluation. With standard monofocal lenses, vision is typically set for distance, and reading glasses are required for near tasks. Another option is monovision, where one eye is set for distance and the other for near vision, but this depends on patient adaptability and surgeon recommendation.
Since her diabetes and hypertension are under control, surgery can generally be planned safely after routine preoperative clearance. Regarding insurance, since you have a corporate policy, cataract surgery is commonly covered, but the exact approval depends on the cataract limit (disease capping) mentioned in your policy.
The hospital insurance team can verify your coverage and confirm how much will be reimbursed or approved under cashless treatment.
