Chronic Ear Infection with Eardrum Perforation : Do I Need Surgery?

I’ve been having recurrent ear problems for a long time. My recent report shows an ear infection along with a perforated eardrum. I also have a history of allergies and thyroid, and I often get colds. I’ve taken antibiotics earlier, but the issue keeps coming back. What is the next step, and will I need surgery? Also, what precautions should I follow before treatment?

Based on your history and report, a perforated eardrum along with ongoing infection usually requires surgical repair (tympanoplasty), especially if symptoms are persistent. Before surgery, it is important that the ear remains completely dry for at least 10–15 days, as surgery is typically done only when there is no active infection or discharge. If there is any infection, it should be treated first with medications like antibiotics.

You should also avoid water entering the ear and follow proper ENT guidance for medications and care. Endoscopic or microscopic surgical options may be considered depending on your condition.

A detailed examination by an ENT specialist will help confirm the plan. Once the ear is stable and dry, surgery can be scheduled, and follow-up care will ensure proper healing and recovery.
