Chronic Tonsil Enlargement: How Do Doctors Decide Between Antibiotics and TonsillectomyTonsillectomy

I had a severe tonsil infection last month, and the doctor said my tonsils are chronically enlarged. I am confused whether to try antibiotics again or go for surgery. What factors do doctors consider before deciding if tonsillectomy is absolutely necessary?

Doctors consider the frequency and severity of infections, response to antibiotics, impact on daily life, and presence of complications such as sleep apnea or difficulty swallowing. Chronic enlargement causing snoring, mouth breathing, or recurrent high fevers may justify surgery over repeated antibiotic courses. Age, overall health, and any underlying conditions are also assessed. If infections are frequent, severe, or resistant to treatment, tonsillectomy is often recommended to prevent long-term complications and improve quality of life.
