Chronic Tonsillitis with Severe Pain : Symptoms, Treatment & Tonsil Surgery

I have been suffering from fever, severe throat pain, and tonsillitis since Monday. Although my fever subsided within a day, the tonsil pain has persisted, and it has now become very difficult for me to swallow food, water, or even saliva. I have already consulted two doctors and have been taking prescribed antibiotics and painkillers for the last 4–5 days, but there is no improvement. Instead, the pain is worsening, and I am also experiencing some ear discomfort and mild nasal symptoms. This is not a frequent issue for me, but this time the infection seems more severe and persistent. Could you please guide me on why this is happening and what would be the best treatment option?

Based on your symptoms and examination, it appears that you are dealing with a severe tonsillar infection where the tonsils are significantly enlarged and infected, which is why you are experiencing intense pain and difficulty in swallowing. Since you have already been on antibiotics for several days without relief, this indicates that the infection is deep-seated and may not resolve completely with medications alone.

In such cases, especially when the tonsils are repeatedly inflamed or severely enlarged, a surgical option like tonsillectomy is often recommended for long-term relief. The procedure is safe, usually done with advanced techniques like laser, and does not affect your immunity. Recovery in adults may take around 4–5 days with manageable pain, and you can gradually return to your normal diet and routine.

For now, you should complete your antibiotic course, continue warm salt water gargles, and manage pain with prescribed medicines, but planning surgery would be a more definitive solution to prevent recurrence and ongoing discomfort.
