Considering Stapedectomy: What’s Recovery Like and When Can I Resume Normal Life?Stapedectomy

I have been using hearing aids for the past year due to stapes fixation, but the doctor suggested stapedectomy as a permanent solution. I am anxious because I have never had surgery before. Is the recovery painful, and how soon can patients resume normal work and social life after the operation?

Recovery from stapedectomy is generally smooth, and significant pain is uncommon. Mild discomfort, congestion, or pressure in the ear may occur for a few days, but it can be managed with prescribed pain relief. Most patients can resume light activities within a week, though strenuous activity, heavy lifting, or swimming should be avoided for a few weeks. Hearing gradually improves over 2–6 weeks, and social interactions usually return to normal as confidence in hearing grows. Following post-operative care instructions ensures a quicker and safer recovery.
