Contact lenses are safe for children when used with proper hygiene. They can be started as early as 8 years of age, depending on how responsible the child is, and many children around 10–11 years adapt to them comfortably.

Hygiene is the most important factor, as improper cleaning can lead to eye infections. For children who may find lens care difficult, daily disposable contact lenses are a safer option because they are used once and thrown away.

Some children may experience dryness or watering, as contact lenses are a foreign body to the eye. Using lubricating eye drops helps improve comfort. Generally, contact lenses can be worn for 8–10 hours, and extended-wear lenses for up to 12 hours. When used correctly and under professional guidance, contact lenses are a safe and effective option for children.
