I spend long hours working on my laptop, and I often experience watery eyes, eye strain, and discomfort. Sometimes my eyes feel dry, irritated, and sensitive to light. What could be causing this, and how can I prevent it?

These symptoms are commonly caused by Computer Vision Syndrome, a condition seen in people who use digital screens for long periods. While using laptops or mobile screens, our blinking rate reduces, which leads to poor tear distribution and dryness of the eyes.

This dryness can cause irritation and inflammation, resulting in eye strain, burning sensation, blurred vision, light sensitivity, and reflex watering of the eyes. Focusing on a screen at the same distance for a long time also causes fatigue of the eye muscles, further worsening discomfort.

To prevent this, practice conscious blinking, take regular breaks, and follow the 20-20-20 rule every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Using anti-glare or blue-light filter glasses can also help reduce eye strain and protect the eyes during prolonged screen use. If symptoms continue despite these measures, an eye consultation is recommended.
