Does Rapid Height Growth Affect Vision? Fact or Myth for Teenagers?

My son has grown very tall after his 13th birthday. His height increased suddenly. I heard that height growth weakens eyesight. Is this correct or not?

This is partially correct. When height increases rapidly during growth spurts, the body grows overall, including the eyeball. As the eyeball elongates, nearsightedness (myopia) power often increases suddenly  this is why many teens notice a sharp jump in their glasses prescription during puberty growth phases.

However, if a child didn’t need glasses before and suddenly grows tall, it doesn’t mean they’ll automatically need glasses. Height growth doesn’t cause vision problems in everyone  it’s just associated with myopia progression in some kids whose eyes are predisposed.

It’s a common misconception. Regular eye check-ups during growth years help catch and manage any changes early.
