Q

Does Tonsil Surgery Prevent Future Throat Infections?Throat Infection

I have been struggling with recurring tonsillitis for years, with high fevers and severe throat pain every few months. My doctor has now advised surgery to remove my tonsils. I am very scared because this is the first time I might undergo surgery. Does removing the tonsils really stop these infections, or can throat problems still continue even after the operation?

Tonsillectomy is a well-established procedure for people suffering from frequent tonsillitis. Removing the tonsils usually brings significant relief by reducing the number of infections, fever episodes, and severe throat pain that keep recurring. While some mild sore throats may still happen due to other causes like viral infections, the intensity and frequency are much lower without the tonsils. Surgery is generally safe, and most patients notice a big improvement in their day-to-day life. Recovery can take one to two weeks, and temporary pain or difficulty swallowing is expected in the initial days. Most people feel a real difference in quality of life afterward, as infections no longer disrupt work, school, or sleep.
