Does Tonsillectomy Fully Stop Chronic Tonsillitis in Adults or Can Infections Return?Tonsillectomy

I am an adult and have had chronic tonsillitis for years. Each infection leaves me bedridden for a week, affecting work and family life. My doctor advised tonsillectomy, but I am scared will surgery fully resolve the problem, or is there a chance that tonsil infections can return even after removal?

For adults, tonsillectomy is highly effective in reducing or completely eliminating recurrent tonsil infections. While the majority of patients see permanent relief, a very small number may still experience throat discomfort or minor infections post-surgery due to other causes, like pharyngeal inflammation or allergies. Recovery tends to be slightly longer and more painful in adults than in children, often requiring 10 to 14 days of soft food and rest. Pain management and hydration are crucial. Most adults return to work after about 1–2 weeks, with significant improvement in quality of life and fewer sick days.
