Does trabeculectomy protect against vision loss in severe glaucoma?

I am 58 and was recently diagnosed with advanced glaucoma. My doctor suggested trabeculectomy surgery to lower eye pressure. I’m extremely scared — will this surgery actually prevent vision loss, or is there still a risk of blindness even after it?

Trabeculectomy is one of the most effective procedures to lower eye pressure and slow down the progression of glaucoma. The main goal is to preserve the vision you still have, because any damage already done cannot be reversed. While surgery greatly reduces the risk of further vision loss, it does not guarantee absolute protection from blindness, especially in advanced cases. Regular follow-up is very important, as the success of the surgery depends on how well the eye heals and how carefully it is monitored afterward.
