FESS Recovery: Is Partial Relief Normal?Fess Surgery
8 months ago
I underwent FESS surgery 8 months ago, but I still feel some nasal congestion and a reduced sense of smell. I was expecting full relief, but the improvement is only partial. Is this normal after FESS, and does it usually take longer to see complete results, or could this mean my polyps are growing back?

It can be disappointing to not feel completely fine even months after surgery, but your experience is not uncommon. Some degree of congestion and a reduced sense of smell can persist because healing inside the nose takes time and swelling may last longer than expected. In cases where nasal polyps were present, there is also a chance that they are starting to grow back, since polyps have a tendency to recur. Regular nasal sprays, saline washes, and follow-up scopes with your ENT are an important part of post-FESS care to control inflammation and prevent regrowth. While many patients enjoy lasting relief, others require ongoing medical treatment along with surgery to keep the sinuses clear. It is best to get re-examined so your doctor can confirm whether this is part of the healing process or an early sign of recurrence.
