Ganglion Cyst vs Lipoma in Hand : Symptoms, Diagnosis & Surgical Treatment
2 weeks ago
I have a small swelling on my wrist/hand for almost a year now. Occasionally it becomes less noticeable, but then it comes back again. I consulted a doctor earlier who mentioned it could be a lipoma and suggested removing it with a syringe, but I was not very sure about that treatment. Recently, I got it checked again and was told it might actually be a ganglion cyst instead of a lipoma. I’m a bit confused about the difference between the two and what exactly should be done. Will it go away on its own, or does it require surgery? Furthermore, how is the procedure done, how big is the cut, and how long does recovery usually take?

It is more likely a ganglion cyst, which is quite different from a lipoma. A ganglion cyst is a fluid-filled swelling that arises from the joint, whereas a lipoma is a fat-based lump that usually stays constant and does not fluctuate in size. The fact that your swelling reduces and then comes back again strongly points towards a ganglion cyst.
Sometimes, temporary treatments like removing fluid with a syringe may give short-term relief, but the cyst often recurs because the root connection with the joint remains. That’s why the most effective treatment is surgical removal, where the cyst is removed completely from its origin.
Before proceeding, an ultrasound is usually advised to confirm whether it is a cyst or lipoma. If it turns out to be a lipoma, it can be removed with a small incision. However, for a ganglion cyst, the surgery may involve a slightly larger cut (around 3–4 cm) to remove it properly from the joint.
Recovery is generally quick your wrist movement may be restricted for about a week with support, but fingers can move normally, and you can perform light daily activities like eating or basic work. Most people return to routine work soon after.
Overall, it is a common and treatable condition, but proper removal is important to reduce the chances of recurrence.
