Gastric Sleeve vs Lap Band vs Bypass. Which Has the Best Results and Lowest Risks?

Gastric band was a procedure which was called a restrictive procedure performed in the earlier era but since last two decades the procedure is now not performed and not recommended in majority of the countries in the world.

However, gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy are very commonly performed procedures and induce significant weight loss. Sleeve gastrectomy is a procedure only on the stomach in which curvature of the stomach is removed.

This curvature secretes a hormone called ghrelin which is also known as a hunger hormone and reduction on this hormone is responsible for reduction in cravings, reduction excess hunger and accelerating the metabolism, therefore inducing weight loss.

A simpler procedure physiological so has least complication. However, gastric bypass is also another standard procedure in which stomach is compartilized into two compartments and one compartment is directly connected to the intestine. Gastric bypass has reduction in ghrelin as well as some intestinal hormones as additional actions and therefore it is also a metabolic procedure.

Choice of procedure depends on various factors like age, male or female, type of diseases, high cholesterol, high lipids, heart disease, medical risk, previous abdominal operations and the BMI of the patient and the clinician and the patient together can choose the appropriate choice of procedure.

Sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass both are good procedures for weight loss only. The longevity of the operation depends on the associated treatment offered with these procedures.
