How can I tell if a painful breast lump is due to a cyst or something serious?

Sometimes the lump feels tender and the surrounding area is slightly swollen. Can infections, hormonal changes, or cysts cause this, and how can I differentiate between these and more serious conditions?

Tenderness, swelling, or discomfort around the lump often point toward hormonal changes, infections, or cystic conditions, rather than cancer.

These lumps may vary in size or sensitivity during your menstrual cycle. However, if the lump doesn’t change over time or continues to grow, it’s always safer to get it evaluated by your doctor. Remember, not all pain is a bad sign, but persistent changes should never be ignored.
