Irregular Periods with Long Bleeding & Spotting – What Could Be the Cause and Treatment
2 weeks ago
I have been facing irregular periods for a long time. Whenever my period starts, for the first 4–6 days it’s only spotting, and then it turns into heavy bleeding that lasts for 10–15 days. My cycle is also irregular, sometimes delayed by 1–2 months. I’ve consulted doctors and taken medicines, but it didn’t help much. One doctor suggested hysteroscopy and polypectomy, but I’m unsure. Can you explain what might be causing this and what treatment I should consider? Also, can I plan for pregnancy with this condition?

Based on your symptoms, the most common causes could be hormonal imbalance, PCOS, increased endometrial thickness, or a uterine polyp. The pattern of prolonged spotting followed by heavy bleeding often points toward a hormonal issue, but if a polyp is present, it may need to be removed through a minor procedure like hysteroscopy.
It’s important to review your ultrasound reports to confirm the exact cause. Treatment usually involves hormonal therapy to regulate periods, and if needed, procedures for structural issues like polyps.
You can still plan for pregnancy even with irregular periods—treatment for conception and cycle regulation can go hand in hand, so you don’t need to wait for completely normal cycles before trying.
