Q

Is Ear Surgery Safe for Older Adults with Health Conditions Like Diabetes?Ear Surgery

My father, who is 65 and has diabetes, was advised ear surgery for a perforated eardrum. We are very worried because of his age and health conditions. How safe is ear surgery in older adults, and do patients usually recover fully without complications?

Ear surgery is generally safe for older adults, even with conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure, provided these are well-controlled before the procedure. Surgeons take extra precautions to minimize risks such as delayed healing or infection. Recovery might be slightly slower than in younger patients, but with proper care, most seniors regain hearing and experience fewer infections. Post-operative monitoring and adherence to medications and hygiene protocols are important to avoid complications. Age itself is not a barrier to achieving successful outcomes.
