Is This Just Ageing or a Treatable Condition? Understanding Urine Leakage & Pelvic Prolapse in Elderly Women

My mother is 72 years old and has been diabetic for the last 30 years. She doesn't get out of bed and doesn't even go downstairs to visit her own sister. When I asked my wife, she said there's urine leaking, especially when she coughs, and something is coming out from below. I really want my mother back. Doctor, please help me with this.

This sounds like a treatable condition called uterine prolapse with urinary incontinence, which can be fixed easily with laparoscopy. In prolapse, the uterus starts coming down and pulls the bladder, rectum, and other organs with it, making everything bulge out. This causes pain while walking, leaking urine when coughing or laughing (stress incontinence), or sudden urges (urge incontinence).

It’s very common in elderly women, especially with long-term diabetes, and it affects their quality of life they feel ashamed and avoid talking about it. Your responsibility as family is to take her to a good gynecologist for an exam.

A laparoscopic mesh surgery can fix it in one day: we pull everything back in place and put a supportive mesh, like in hernia repair, so she can walk comfortably without leaks.

If it’s stress incontinence (leaking on cough), a simple tape procedure supports the urethra. For urge incontinence (sudden bathroom rushes), medicines like solifenacin help. Also, manage diabetes, reduce weight if needed, avoid tea/coffee/excess water, and encourage light movement to improve mobility. Visit a specialist soon for mesh surgery your mother can get her active life back
