Mastoidectomy Recovery: Is Persistent Muffled Hearing or Buzzing Normal?Ear Surgery
3 weeks ago
I underwent mastoidectomy a few months ago after repeated ear infections, but I still feel some muffled hearing and occasional buzzing in my ear. I thought surgery would completely fix the problem. Is it normal to still have these issues after ear surgery, or could it mean complications?

It is common for hearing to remain slightly muffled or for buzzing (tinnitus) to persist for weeks to months after ear surgery. The ear and middle ear structures take time to heal, and swelling or fluid can temporarily affect hearing. If these symptoms are slowly improving, it usually reflects normal recovery. Persistent or worsening symptoms may indicate fluid buildup, infection, or incomplete healing, in which case a follow-up with your ENT is recommended. Most patients eventually regain much of their hearing and find the buzzing diminishes as the ear fully recovers.
