Pain During Intercourse , What Could Be the Cause?

I have been married for three years, and I experience significant pain during intercourse, which is very uncomfortable. Could this be due to an infection or another condition? Is there any treatment available?

Pain during intercourse, or difficulty having intercourse, is actually a common issue and can have multiple causes. If you have experienced pain from the very beginning, it may be related to a condition called vaginismus, where fear or tension in the mind and muscles causes discomfort during penetration. Even for first-time experiences, some degree of discomfort can be normal.

Other common causes include infections, such as pelvic infections, which may sometimes cause discharge, urinary problems, or pain during sex. In some cases, the infection may be deeper inside the pelvis, leading to severe pain during intercourse.

Regardless of the cause, it is very important to visit a gynecologist to identify the exact reason for the pain. Once the underlying cause is diagnosed whether it is an infection, vaginismus, or another condition appropriate treatment can be provided, which may include medication, physiotherapy, or counseling to help manage the discomfort effectively.
