Teen Septoplasty: Is Surgery Safe for Growth?Septoplasty

My 17-year-old son is struggling with a deviated septum due to a sports injury. He snores heavily, gets frequent colds, and feels tired all day because of disturbed sleep. The doctor has recommended septoplasty, but as a parent, I am worried if surgery at such a young age could affect his nose shape or growth. Is it safe for teenagers to undergo this surgery?

Septoplasty is considered safe for teenagers once nasal growth is nearly complete, which usually happens around the age of 16 to 17 in boys. At this stage, surgery will not interfere with further growth or change the natural development of the nose. The procedure focuses only on correcting the internal wall that divides the nostrils and does not alter the external appearance. Since your son is already struggling with snoring, poor sleep, and daytime fatigue, correcting the septum can make a big difference in his health and overall energy. By improving airflow, the surgery often helps reduce colds, infections, and sleep disturbances. Parents often feel anxious about surgery at this age, but when recommended by an experienced ENT, the benefits generally outweigh the concerns.
