Vocal Cord Polyps Symptoms : Causes of Hoarseness & Surgical Treatment Explained

I have been experiencing hoarseness in my voice for several weeks along with voice fatigue, especially after speaking for long periods. My ENT specialist suggested that I may have vocal cord polyps. Could you explain what causes this condition and how it is treated?

Vocal cord polyps are benign growths that develop on the vocal cords, often due to voice strain, smoking, acid reflux, or vocal misuse. Common symptoms include hoarseness, voice changes, voice fatigue and sometimes difficulty speaking clearly. Diagnosis is made through laryngoscopy, which allows visualization of the vocal cords. Treatment depends on the size and severity of the polyps.

In many cases, voice therapy and medications may be tried initially. However, if the polyps are persistent or affecting the voice significantly, surgical removal may be recommended. Microlaryngeal surgery is commonly used to remove vocal cord polyps with precision. Post surgery voice rest and therapy are important for proper recovery and preventing recurrence.
