What activities should I avoid after cataract surgery?

I’m worried about what I can and cannot do after the surgery. Are there any strict restrictions regarding bending, lifting heavy weights, washing my hair, rubbing my eyes, or going outside in bright sunlight during the recovery period?

It’s completely understandable to worry about restrictions after cataract surgery. These are straightforward guidelines to ensure smooth healing in the first 1-2 weeks. Avoid heavy lifting (over 10-15 pounds), deep bending at the waist, or straining, as these can temporarily raise eye pressure; no rubbing or touching the operated eye, even if itchy—use prescribed drops instead and gently dab tears from your cheek. Washing your hair or showering is fine, but keep soap, shampoo, and direct water away from the eye, tilting your head back and patting dry softly afterward.

Going outside in bright sunlight is okay with protection: wear the surgeon-provided shield at night and dark sunglasses during the day to cut glare and shield from dust or wind. Light walking, reading, or screen time is usually safe soon after if comfortable, but skip swimming, dusty areas, or intense exercise until your follow-up clearance. Call your doctor right away for worsening pain, redness, or vision changes—these rules make recovery quick and trouble-free for most.
