What Are the Treatment Options for Pilonidal Sinus, and Is Laser Surgery Better Than Open Surgery?

I wanted to understand how pilonidal sinus is treated and whether surgery is always required. I also asked about insurance coverage, the difference between laser and open surgery, total cost, recovery time, and whether I need to travel to another city for treatment. Since I’ve been having symptoms for a few months, I want to know which option is better and when I should plan the procedure.

In the early stage, pilonidal sinus can sometimes be managed temporarily with antibiotics and painkillers, mainly to reduce infection and pain.

These measures usually provide short-term relief only. If the problem has been present for a long time or the sinus tract has grown inside, an MRI scan may be required to assess its depth and extent.

For long-standing or painful cases, surgical treatment is recommended. There are two main approaches: open surgery and laser surgery. Open surgery is usually done locally, while laser surgery is available in major cities due to the advanced and expensive equipment involved. Laser treatment offers faster recovery, less pain, and lower chances of recurrence, allowing patients to return to normal activities sooner.

The laser surgery package costs around ₹60,000, which includes a complete treatment package covering hospitalization, procedure, and related care. Health insurance is available for eligible cases, depending on policy terms.

Since you’ve been experiencing symptoms for about 6 months, it’s advisable not to delay treatment. Postponing the procedure may allow the sinus tract to grow further inside, making treatment more complex later. You can plan the surgery at a convenient time  even before important commitments like exams and come in the morning with a friend or relative for support.

Early treatment generally leads to faster healing, fewer complications, and lower recurrence, so addressing pilonidal sinus at this stage is a wise decision.
