What should I expect on the day of cataract surgery? Do I need someone to accompany me, how long will I be at the clinic, and will I be able to return home the same day after the procedure?

On the day of cataract surgery, arrive early for check-in, where they’ll review your health, give numbing drops to dilate your pupil and relax you with mild sedation if needed, and clean the eye area. The procedure itself is quick 10-20 minutes per eye with you awake but comfortable, feeling only gentle pressure as the surgeon removes the cloudy lens and inserts the new one through a tiny self-sealing incision. You’ll rest briefly afterward for monitoring.

Yes, bring someone to accompany you and drive you home, as the drops affect vision temporarily and sedation might make you drowsy; plan for 2-4 hours total at the clinic. Most patients go home the same day, resuming light activities soon, with sharper vision starting within hours. Follow post-op drops and instructions for a smooth recovery.
