What Is Vaginal Fluid and Why Does It Change Through the Month?
I know discharge is normal but I want to actually understand it. What is vaginal fluid made of, where does it come from, and why does it change in texture and amount throughout the month?

Vaginal fluid is produced continuously as part of normal vaginal function. It serves several real purposes.
What it’s made of: Secretions from cervical glands (the main source), Bartholin’s glands near the vaginal opening, fluid that seeps through vaginal walls, shed vaginal cells, and normal Lactobacillus bacteria. It’s slightly acidic (pH 3.8-4.5), which prevents harmful bacteria and fungi from growing.
What it does: Self-cleaning – carries away dead cells and bacteria continuously. Lubricates the vaginal walls. During arousal, secretions increase to provide lubrication for sex.
How it changes through the cycle:
- Days 5-10 (after period): Light, sticky or dry
- Days 11-14 (approaching ovulation): Clear, slippery, stretchy – like egg whites. Most fertile phase.
