Which Tablets Can Prevent Pregnancy After Unprotected Sex?

I had unprotected sex, and I'm worried about pregnancy. What tablets can be taken to prevent it? Are they available without a prescription, and how soon do I need to take them to make them work?

Emergency contraceptive pills are the tablets used after unprotected sex. In India, common brands include I-Pill and Unwanted 72. These contain levonorgestrel.

Effectiveness drops quickly with time:

  • Within 24 hours: ~95% effective
  • Within 48 hours: ~85%
  • Up to 72 hours: ~58–60%

They work by delaying ovulation they don’t end an existing pregnancy. Available over the counter without a prescription. Side effects include nausea, headache, and irregular bleeding. Your next period may come early or late.

These are for occasional emergencies, not regular use. For ongoing contraception, speak to a gynecologist about daily pills, IUDs, or other reliable options.
