What is sinusitis?

Sinusitis is a health problem where the lining of the sinuses or cavities around the nasal passages become inflamed or swollen. Anyone, including children, adults and old people can get sinusitis infection. However, individuals with allergies, nasal polyps, asthma or abnormal nose structures are more likely to get sinusitis. Smoking can also increase the severity and complexity of sinus infection. Two types of sinusitis are noticed and they are acute sinusitis and chronic sinusitis.

Acute Sinusitis- Refers to sinusitis that lasts less than 4 weeks. Most cases of acute sinusitis begin as a common cold and the symptoms often go away in 7 to 10 days. But in some cases, a bacterial infection develops, which may increase the symptoms and complexity of the condition.

Chronic Sinusitis- Refers to sinusitis lasting more than 12 weeks and may not get better despite medical treatment.

Patients suffering from chronic sinusitis often receive relief with Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS). This minimally invasive and scar-free procedure removes blockages in the sinuses that cause symptoms like facial pressure, pain, impaired breathing or drainage. Contact the top ENT doctors in Hyderabad at Pristyn Care to undergo the safest and latest surgical procedure (FESS) for your sinusitis.

Doctor Doing a Surgery

ENT doctors at Pristyn Care use nasal endoscopy to look into your nose and to rule out the presence of any other infections. They are highly trained and experienced in diagnosing sinusitis through physical examination of your nose, ears, and throat. They also check the tenderness by pressing or tapping on your nose and face.

Our ENT doctors even use your past medication and medical history to evaluate the root cause of your sinusitis. They use USFDA approved diagnostic tools and medical devices during the process of diagnosing. To get diagnosed with your health problems, have a consultation with our ENT doctors by booking an appointment.

FESS or Functional endoscopic sinus surgery is the surgery performed to treat chronic or recurrent sinusitis. FESS is usually performed under anesthesia and usually takes less than an hour to complete. This surgery is completely performed through the nose and does not cause incisions or result in any facial scars or changes to the outside shape/appearance of the nose. As the procedure begins, the ENT surgeon will use a small endoscope to examine each of the nasal passages. Special instruments to remove any polyps or obstructions and to widen the passages from sinuses into the nose to allow for normal ventilation. The success rate of FESS is 80% to 90% with a very low recurrence rate. Patients with long-term or chronic sinusitis can find long-lasting relief from sinusitis with this minimally invasive surgery.

Consult experienced ENT specialist at Pristyn Care for sinusitis treatment?

Sinusitis can be treated medically (nonsurgical treatments) or surgically. Medical treatment for sinusitis can include medications, natural remedies and lifestyle changes. The aim of medical treatment is to encourage the sinuses to drain naturally and reduce the swelling in the lining of the nose and sinuses. Prescribed medications and avoiding triggers can help manage mild sinusitis. The doctor may also ask you to use nasal drops or sprays to decongest the nose and to improve the sinus drainage. However, sprays or drops for sinusitis should only be used as a temporary solution and is not a permanent solution for sinusitis. The doctor may also recommend a combination of treatment options to see what works for you. But if several treatment options and lifestyle modifications fail to cure sinusitis, surgery should be considered. Our ENT surgeons in Hyderabad have years of experience in treating recurrent or chronic sinusitis with minimally invasive sinusitis surgery. Functional endoscopic sinusitis surgery or FESS is considered the most successful and efficient treatment for sinusitis that does not get better with medical treatments.

Is FESS surgery is the only solution to get rid of sinus infection permanently?

The answer to the above question varies from individual to individual, depending on symptoms, severity, grade or type of sinusitis and how sinusitis has impacted the individual’s quality of life. If the patient does not respond to medical treatment (which will include medications, decongestants, nasal sprays/ drops), surgery can be the solution. Surgical treatment for sinusitis has dramatically evolved over the last decade. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery is a minimally invasive surgery that provides relief from chronic and recurrent sinusitis. The benefit of this innovative surgical technique is that the surgery can be performed as a day care procedure, and has a much shorter recovery period. There is no need for nasal packing after endoscopic sinus surgery, which most patients previously found very traumatic and uncomfortable.

The goal of FESS or endoscopic sinusitis surgery is to remove blockages and to open up the passages to allow natural ventilation and drainage. The surgery also drains the sinuses and prevents fluid from building up in the sinuses again. Sinus surgery has a very good success rate of 80 % to 90% and most people who undergo endoscopic sinus surgery report a significant improvement in symptoms and associated complications. The endoscopic sinus surgery performed by sinus specialists in Hyderabad can also help you to breathe easily and it can help provide relief from facial pain, sinusitis headaches, and restore a normal sense of smell. Having this operation could make a remarkable difference to your quality of life as well as to your overall health.

Why I should undergo FESS surgery for sinusitis?

Common reasons for sinus surgery include-

  • Recurrent or chronic sinusitis even after medical treatment
  • Sinus disease caused due to a fungal infection
  • Sinus or nasal or polyps
  • Structural abnormalities of the sinuses or nose
  • Sinus infection that has spread to bones surrounding the sinuses
  • Cancer of the sinuses

Having any surgery can be a big decision and you should discuss this carefully with a specialist surgeon. The doctor will thoroughly diagnose your condition and look into your symptoms, medical history and impact of the condition on your overall health and quality of life. After the diagnosis, the doctor would be able to tell which type of sinusitis you have. Depending on that, treatment will be decided.

Sinus surgery will only be recommended if you have chronic or recurring sinusitis problems that have not responded to the other treatment options. If surgery seems to be the most promising treatment for you, the doctor will brief you about the procedure and ensure that you understand the risks and benefits of the procedure. If you are suffering from sinusitis, meet our expert sinusitis doctors in Hyderabad to know if surgery is right for you.
