What is Septoplasty?

The surgical procedure to remedy a disfigured septum can straighten the septum, enabling improved airflow through the nose. A disfigured septum may be caused due to injuries, or birth defects as few people are born with a disfigured septum. Symptoms of deviated septum include facial pain, frequent nosebleeds, nasal obstruction, and surgery is the only way to correct a deviated septum.

Diagnosis

An ENT doctor can diagnose a deviated septum during the physical examination. Usually, bright light and an instrument that can help visualize the nasal septum by opening the nostril (nasal speculum) will help make the correct diagnosis.

Surgery

Well, in order to treat a deviated septum, only medical treatment is an advanced surgical procedure. The best possible surgical procedure for treating a deviated septum takes anywhere between 30-90 minutes to complete. However, it depends on the complexity of the condition as well. Any hindrance such as extra pieces of cartilage or bone is removed in the procedure to straighten the septum. The patient may experience improved breathing, improved quality of life, heightened sense of smell and a better facial structure.
