What is a Turbinate Reduction?

Turbinates are responsible for cleaning and humidifying the air we breathe. They are small structures in the nose surrounded by a mucous membrane and vascular tissue outside. Turbinates can become inflamed and swollen due to infection, or allergies. They cause nasal obstruction and produce an excessive amount of mucus. This leads to obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). It is a sleep disorder which means a decrease in airflow when the patient is trying to breathe. It is the most common type of sleep-disordered breathing and it involves recurrent episodes of collapsing of the upper airway during sleep. Turbinates reduction surgery can be done to fix blocked airways and improve breathing.

Diagnosis

The doctor will perform a physical examination and look at nasal turbinates. If the turbinates are too large, they can actually block airflow. This condition causes breathing problems, frequent infections, and nosebleeds. The ENT specialist may recommend over-the-counter medications or surgical treatments based on the severity of symptoms.

Surgery

Turbinate Reduction is the procedure where the nasal turbinates are inspected and reduced in size for improved nasal flow. Turbinates surgery is performed through the nostrils under general anesthesia. In some cases, turbinates surgery is performed in conjunction with sinus surgery to improve nasal breathing.
