Smoking and its implications on pregnancy

Smoking and pregnancy don't go together. If you smoke during pregnancy, it puts both you and your unborn baby at risk. Cigarettes contain dangerous chemicals like nicotine, carbon monoxide, and tar. When a pregnant woman smokes a cigarette, it cuts down oxygen to her unborn baby and exposes the child to a cocktail of chemicals which significantly increases the risk of pregnancy complications, some of which can be fatal for the mother or the baby.

Problem in Getting pregnant

If want to get pregnant and you smoke, quitting the habit must be a priority. Smoking can stop you from getting pregnant early. Both male and female smokers are about twice as likely to have problems with fertility as compared to nonsmokers,

Risk of Miscarriage and stillbirth

The unforeseen loss of a pregnancy is a terrible experience at any stage. Miscarriages usually occur in the first three months of pregnancy. Rarely, they can occur after 20 weeks of gestation known as a stillbirth. Smoking increases the likelihood of both early miscarriage and stillbirth.

Risk of Ectopic pregnancy

Nicotine found in cigarette can cause contractions in the fallopian tubes which prevent an embryo from passing through resulting in an ectopic pregnancy. This happens when a fertilized egg implants outside of the uterus, either in the fallopian tube, or in the abdomen. In this condition, the embryo must be removed to avoid life-threatening complications to the mother.

Risk of Placental abruption

The placenta is formed during pregnancy to provide the fetus with nutrients and oxygen. Smoking is a big risk factor for numerous complications linked to the placenta like placenta abruption. Here, the placenta separates from the uterus before childbirth. Placenta abruption may cause severe bleeding and threaten the life of both the mother and the child.

Risk of Preterm birth

Smoking during pregnancy can cause preterm birth in which a baby is born too early. There is numerous health risks related with a preterm birth including visual and hearing impairments, learning and behavioral problems, mental disability and other complications

Low birth weight

Smoking may also cause babies to be born with a low birth weight which doesn’t just mean delivering a small infant. Low birth weight may also lead to other health problems and disabilities.

Birth defects

Smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of your baby being born with birth defects like congenital heart defects and problems with the structure of the heart, cleft lip or cleft palate etc.
