What is Abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tightens the weakened or separated abdominal muscles. It creates a smoother, firmer abdominal contour. Open abdominoplasty is performed through a horizontal incision across the lower abdomen. Causes

Common causes leading to the need for abdominoplasty include:

  • Excess skin and fat after significant weight loss or bariatric surgery
  • Abdominal skin laxity following one or more pregnancies
  • Diastasis recti or separation of the rectus abdominis muscles
  • Age-related loss of skin elasticity in the abdominal area
  • Genetic predisposition to fat accumulation in the abdomen
  • Failure of diet and exercise to address loose abdominal skin

Are you going through any of these symptoms?

Types of Abdominoplasty

Full or complete abdominoplasty addresses the entire abdominal area from ribs to pubis with muscle repair. Mini abdominoplasty is a less extensive procedure for excess skin limited to below the navel. Extended abdominoplasty also addresses the flanks and lower back. Circumferential or belt lipectomy treats the entire torso after massive weight loss. Each type is tailored to the extent of skin excess and muscle laxity.

Who Needs Abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty is suitable for adults at stable body weight with excess abdominal skin and fat that has not responded to diet and exercise. It is commonly performed after pregnancy, significant weight loss, or aging. Ideal candidates are non-smokers in good health with realistic expectations. Women planning future pregnancies should postpone the procedure as future pregnancies will affect results.

Benefits of Abdominoplasty

Benefits of abdominoplasty include:

  • Removal of excess hanging abdominal skin and fat
  • Repair of diastasis recti restoring abdominal wall strength
  • Improved abdominal contour and body shape
  • Relief from skin rashes and infections under abdominal folds
  • Enhanced posture and core stability after muscle repair
  • Improved self-confidence and clothing fit

Diagnosis

Pre-operative evaluation for abdominoplasty includes:

  • Physical examination to assess skin laxity, fat distribution, and muscle separation
  • BMI and weight stability assessment over the past 6 months
  • Abdominal ultrasound to assess diastasis recti and hernias
  • Review of prior abdominal surgeries and scars
  • Blood tests and cardiac evaluation for surgical fitness
  • Photographic documentation for surgical planning

Surgical Procedure

Abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. A horizontal incision is made from hip to hip just above the pubic area. Excess skin and fat are removed, separated abdominal muscles are repaired with sutures, and the remaining skin is pulled down and sutured closed. The navel is repositioned through a new opening. The procedure takes 2 to 4 hours.

Abdominoplasty Procedure Steps

The open abdominoplasty procedure involves:

  • General anesthesia administration and patient positioning
  • Making a horizontal incision from hip to hip above the pubic hairline
  • Elevating the abdominal skin flap up to the ribcage
  • Repairing the diastasis recti by suturing the separated muscles together
  • Removing excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen
  • Pulling the upper skin flap downward and trimming excess tissue
  • Creating a new opening for the navel and suturing it in place
  • Closing the incision in multiple layers with drains placed as needed

After the Surgery

Recovery after abdominoplasty takes 4 to 8 weeks. Hospital stay is 1 to 2 days. Surgical drains are removed within 1 to 2 weeks. Patients wear an abdominal binder for 4 to 6 weeks. Walking is encouraged from day one but strenuous activity is restricted for 6 weeks. Most patients return to desk work within 2 to 3 weeks. Final results are visible after 6 months once swelling resolves.

Complications of Abdominoplasty

Potential complications of abdominoplasty include:

  • Seroma or fluid collection under the skin flap
  • Hematoma requiring drainage
  • Wound infection or delayed healing
  • Deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism
  • Visible scarring at the incision site
  • Skin necrosis at wound edges in rare cases
  • Asymmetry or contour irregularity requiring revision

FAQs About Abdominoplasty Surgery

Is abdominoplasty permanent?

Abdominoplasty provides long-lasting results when weight is maintained. Weight gain after surgery can affect results. The muscle repair is permanent. Maintaining a stable weight and healthy lifestyle helps preserve results for many years.

How long is the recovery period?

Recovery takes 4 to 8 weeks. Most patients return to desk work within 2 to 3 weeks and resume full activity within 6 to 8 weeks. Final results including complete resolution of swelling take 6 months to fully appear.

Will abdominoplasty remove stretch marks?

Abdominoplasty can remove stretch marks located on the skin excised during surgery, primarily those below the navel. Stretch marks above the navel may not be removed but may be repositioned lower. Laser treatment can address remaining stretch marks.

Can I have abdominoplasty after pregnancy?

Yes, abdominoplasty is commonly performed after pregnancy to address loose skin and diastasis recti. It is best to wait until you have completed your family as future pregnancies can affect the surgical results.
