What is Laparoscopy?

Laparoscopy is a form of surgery as well as a diagnostic test. It means that it helps to get a closer look at the organs in the abdomen, diagnose different medical conditions safely, and also helps to treat them in a minimally invasive manner. For diagnosis alone, the term laparoscopy is used, and for surgical procedures, the term “laparoscopy surgery” is appropriate. Laparoscopy surgery is a minimally invasive surgery (MIS), also known as bandaid surgery or keyhole surgery, which is a modern procedure performed in the abdomen or pelvis. This type of surgery requires only small incisions and a laparoscope (a slender, lighted telescope) that provides clear images of the internal organs with the help of the camera attached to its end.

How is laparoscopic surgery performed?

Laparoscopic surgery is usually performed in a hospital or clinic on an outpatient basis. The steps involved in the surgery are given below:

  • You will be asked to change your clothes and put on a hospital gown that is loose and comfortable.
  • You will be taken to the operation theatre and given general/local/spinal anesthesia. An anesthesiologist will give the anesthesia. Mostly general anesthesia is used for laparoscopy surgery to ensure that the patient doesn’t feel stressed or anxious during the procedure. General anesthesia makes the patient fall asleep.
  • Once the anesthetic agents take effect and you don’t feel the region, the surgeon will make a few small incisions to insert the laparoscope and other surgical instruments inside the body.
  • Gas will be used to inflate the abdomen to ensure that there is ample space to carry out the procedure safely without harming the surrounding tissues.
  • The laparoscope will provide clear images of the internal organs on a computer screen and the surgeon will operate accordingly.
  • After the condition is treated, the abdomen is deflated and the incisions are closed with the help of surgical tape, glue, or stitches  (if required).
  • You will be transferred to the observation/recovery room, where a nurse will monitor your vitals until you wake up.

After you wake up, you will have to stay in the medical center for a couple of hours. The surgeon will check your health and give clearance for discharge if everything is fine. If the doctor suspects that there are some risks of post-surgery complications, he/she may ask you to stay overnight.

Laparoscopy Surgery Vs. Open Surgery

Laparoscopy surgery is the modern technique to perform surgeries for the treatment of different medical conditions. Though open surgery is also safe and effective, it has some negative sides, such as large incisions, pain after surgery, risk of excessive blood loss, longer downtime, chances of infections, longer hospitalization, etc. All this can be avoided thanks to the minimally invasive laparoscopy technique.

The various advantages of laparoscopy surgery over open surgery are given below:

  • It is performed through small keyhole-sized incisions that heal faster.
  • The patient requires minimal downtime and doesn’t have as many restrictions over physical activities.
  • The pain after the surgery is also minimal as the incisions are small, and scarring is also minimal. In most cases, the scars fade away and become almost invisible within a few months as the body heals.
  • Most of the risks and complications can also be successfully avoided, including infection and blood loss.
  • There is no need to stay in the hospital for more than 24 hours.
  • The recovery is quick and smooth, allowing the patient to return to normal activities as soon as possible.

Both laparoscopy and open surgery have some risks like any other surgical procedure. But minimally invasive procedures are safer than open surgical procedures and have higher chances of success as well. The benefits of laparoscopic surgery are the primary reason why most people prefer this technique over traditional open surgery.

Dos & Don’ts After Laparoscopy Surgery

Being a minimally invasive procedure, laparoscopic surgery doesn’t put a lot of restrictions on the patient. Still, there are several things that you will have to take care of after having surgery. These dos and don’ts that you have to pay attention to are given below:

  • Do not drink alcohol or smoke for at least one month after having the surgery.
  • Do not drive in the next 24 hours after the surgery.
  • Do take a bath and clean the wound whenever possible.
  • Avoid soaking your body in the water or taking showers.
  • Return to work only after the pain and swelling subside.
  • Do eat a healthy and balanced diet rich in fiber to avoid constipation.
  • Do take follow-ups with the doctor to ensure that your body is healing properly.

Before you leave the hospital premises, the doctor will provide you with detailed instructions on how to take care of your body after the surgery. If you listen to the doctor’s advice and follow his/her instructions properly, you will be able to recover faster than expected.
