About IUI

IUI is a fertility treatment in which sperm is directly placed into the uterus of the woman. When couples have problems with their health, they often fail to conceive through the natural process. In IUI, the sperm is washed and concentrated and placed directly into the uterus, bringing a better chance for the sperm to come closer to the egg.

Treatment

IUI treatment procedure explained step-by-step

Step 1:

Consultation with a fertility specialist – Consulting with a good fertility specialist is crucial for the entire treatment procedure. The IUI doctor would try to understand your health condition during the consultation and provide you with the best medications and lifestyle habits to prepare your body for IUI treatment.

Step 2:

Stimulating the production of eggs – If the diagnosis reports point towards any abnormalities with the woman’s ovulation, the fertility doctor may recommend medication to amplify the production of the eggs. The ovulation stimulation can also be done by injecting drugs into the female’s body.

Step3:

Tracking your monthly cycle – The fertility specialist would then follow your monthly cycle to determine the best time to begin the IUI treatment. The menstrual cycle tracking can be done either by monitoring the cervical mucus and its temperature or with the help of ovulation cycle tracking kits.

Step 4:

Induce ovulation – Once a ripe egg is present, a patient is given a “trigger shot” that causes ovulation within about 36 hours. The trigger shot is usually given by a nurse at the clinic or self-administered at home.

Step 5:

Sperm harvesting – For IUI treatment, the couple and the doctor may decide whether to use fresh sperm or frozen sperm. If the couple chooses to use fresh sperm, the male partner or the donor will need to produce it at the fertility clinic by masturbating. If the couple decides to use frozen sperm, they can get in touch with any infertility treatment labs nearby. Frozen sperm is defrosted and then washed to eliminate the impurities before they are used for the treatment.

Step 6:

Insertion of the sperm / insemination – Once the female ovulates and the sperm is washed out of all impurities and dirt, and the fertility doctor uses a thin, flexible catheter to implant the sperm into the female partner’s uterus. Unlike IVF, IUI does not involve any painful steps. However, the insertion of the catheter may cause the female to feel slight cramps and discomfort.

Step 7:

Pregnancy test – This is the last step of the IUI treatment, wherein the doctor checks if the treatment has been successful or not. This test can be done two weeks after the sperm has been implanted in the uterus. If the pregnancy is not successful, the doctor might repeat the entire procedure or suggest another treatment line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is IUI painful?

IUI treatment is ideally a painless procedure. But some women have reported experiencing mild discomfort when the speculum is inserted. Many others also experience cramping when the catheter is passed through the cervix. The discomfort is very minimal, lasts for a short time and is likely to go away by the end of the treatment procedure.

Does IUI cause twins?

IUI can often lead to multiple gestations because the medications trigger the body to produce several egg follicles. Medical reports suggest that the rate of twins per pregnancy in IUI is 8-30 percent.

What is the success rate of IUI treatment?

The success rate of IUI treatment, in most cases, directly depends on the blockage in the fallopian tube. Medical reports published in Webmd state that the success rate of IUI is 11.7 percent, if the blockage is very close to the ovary. If the blockage is close to the uterus, the success of IUI treatment can go up to 38.1 percent.

Can I pee after IUI?

Yes, you can pee after IUI treatment, but not immediately. Fertility specialists recommend not peeing for at least 2 hours after the IUI procedure.

Is there a chance of the sperm falling out in IUI treatment?

No, once the sperm is successfully injected into the uterus, it does not fall out. However, at times, the sperm may slip off due to the increased wetness after the procedure due to the loosening in the mucus and the cervix.

How long does IUI take to get pregnant?

Post insemination, it may take approximately two weeks until the candidate undergoes an IUI test to determine if the IUI treatment has been successful or not.

Can IUI be done at home?

Yes, IUI can be done at home. But, we don’t recommend doing so. Since it is a delicate procedure and even the slightest mistake can cause heavily on the outcome, it is best if the IUI treatment is performed by a trained and experienced fertility specialist.

Can we have sex after IUI treatment?

Yes, you can have sexual intercourse after IUI treatment. But, there might be some restrictions. The only part of IUI treatment where a couple needs to avoid sex is the day following the ‘trigger shot’. The trigger shot allows eggs to reach final maturity and then be ovulated into the fallopian tubes.

What are the signs of a successful IUI treatment?

Early signs of pregnancy following an IUI treatment include:

  • Breast tenderness – Change in the levels of progesterone and estrogen can cause breast tenderness
  • Bloody spotting – Implantation bleeding and cramping may occur 2 weeks after the IUI treatment

What is 'false-positive' and 'false-negative' in IUI?

Testing too soon after the IUI procedure or a wrong test could produce a result that is:

  • False-negative – If pregnancy hormones aren’t yet at measurable levels, the test result may be negative when, in fact, you really are pregnant.
  • False-positive – If you’re using ovulation-inducing medication such as HCG, the medication that’s still circulating in your body could indicate a pregnancy when you really aren’t pregnant.

What is the cost of IUI in Visakhapatnam?

What is the difference between IUI and IVF?

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) and In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) are the two most commonly used fertility treatments. Both IVF and IUI are used to help couples who face trouble conceiving naturally. However, there is a thin line of difference between the two procedures.

In IUI, the sperm is placed directly into the uterus using a speculum.
In IVF, the eggs are surgically removed and are fertilized with the sperm on a dish, in a lab-assisted environment. The fertilized egg is then transferred into the uterus.
