Paediatric ENT

These are the common pediatric problems which are found in children:

  • Tonsils: Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsils. Tonsils are lumps of tissue on both sides of the back of the throat which will help the immune system protect the body from infections. Inflamed tonsils get red and swollen can also cause a sore throat.

These are the symptoms of tonsillitis:

  • Fever
  • Bad breath
  • Swollen glands in the neck
  • Trouble in swallowing
  • A sore throat
  • Adenoid: The adenoids are patches of tissues which sit at the very back of the nasal passage of the throat. Some of the parents confuse the adenoids with tonsils, which are visible at the back of the throat. The adenoids aren’t directly visible in a routine nose exam. Like the tonsils, adenoids do the important work for the babies and are the first line of defence when the harmful bacteria are swallowed. As the child grows, the significance of the adenoids becomes low. Adenoids begin to shrink in childhood. They continue to decrease in the size into teen years.

Symptoms of the adenoids are:

  • Bad breath and dry lips
  • Snoring
  • Restless sleep
  • Ongoing middle ear infections
  • Sounding as if the nose is pinched
  • Difficulty in breathing through the nose
  • Myringotomy: Myringotomy tubes are surgically placed into the child’s eardrum by an ENT doctor. The tubes can be made up of plastic or metal. The tubes help in the draining of the fluid from the middle ear in order to reduce the risk of ear infections. During the ear infection, the fluid gathers in the middle ear, which will affect the child’s hearing. Sometimes, when the infection is gone, some of the fluid may remain in the ear. These tubes can help drain out this fluid and also prevent it from building up. The most common ages are from 1 to 3 years old. By the age of 5 years, most children have wider and longer tubes, thus it allows the better drainage.
