A 2 cm hernia means the muscle wall has a 2 cm opening through which tissue is bulging out. Both open and laparoscopic (telescope) surgeries can repair it, but laparoscopic surgery is usually preferred today. It is done through tiny cuts, causes less pain, has a lower risk of infection, no big stitches, and you can go home the same day.
It also allows the surgeon to check both sides and strengthen nearby weak muscles using a mesh. Open surgery may be chosen only for elderly patients or those unfit for anesthesia, but for most people, laparoscopic repair is safer and more comfortable.
