Is it possible to lose too much weight after undergoing a gastric sleeve or bypass surgery? What are some measures that can be taken to prevent excessive weight loss?

Generally, after any kind of bariatric surgery, patients can lose about 80 to 85 percent of their excess weight loss. That means some excess weight can remain there or they remain healthy. Some aggressive malabsorptive procedures only can give rise to excessive weight loss, but generally in India, those procedures are not very commonly performed.
Having a standard gastric bypass with a standard guideline or a standard sleeve with a standard protocol of steps would always prevent excessive weight loss unless the patient has some other disease. In general, weight regain over time is more of a worry than excessive weight loss.
However, simple tips are to have adequate proteins, adequate vitamins and bariatric specific supplements and get advice from a bariatric specialist nutritionist from a center of excellence.
